I mentioned a rather bizarre task in my Monday Musings post this week, our Whirlpool Gold refrigerator has been consistently making garlic smelling ice for about a year. As you probably already notice, we are procrastinators and instead of just fixing the stinky ice maker we simply stopped using ice altogether!
Not using ice isn’t a big deal in most states, I grew up in England where the bartender would look at you funny if you asked for ice, but here in Texas it is essential to have nice cold icy drinks from about April – September!
Needless to say, I should have fixed the ice maker a long time ago…
Anyhoo, my weekly tasks included trying to remove the garlicy smell from our ice and ice maker.
pecifics: We have a Whirlpool Gold refrigerator and here is a photo of the offending garlic ice maker…
We don’t store frozen garlic or frozen onion or anything particularly stinky in our fridge so the smelly ice was quite a mystery.
I dumped out the year old ice, which had actually formed a mini replica of “Shrek the Halls Ice Sculptures” – I probably could have charged people to see it, families would have taken photos with it etc….
After a thorough cleaning with some lemony dish cleaner things were smelling alot better but I still wondered what had made the stinky ice in the first place.
I didn’t find a smoking “stinky garlic” gun but I did find several suggestions as to what may have caused it;
Possible Causes of Ice that Smells Like Garlic;
- Food odor permeating the ice
- Rusty metal – perhaps the ice auger?
- High mineral content in the water supply
- Someone is secretly rubbing garlic on your ice cubes at night (My imagination!)
Possible Fixes for Ice that Smells Like Garlic;
- Thorough cleaning with lemon and baking soda
- Use baking soda fridge packs
- Discard any old or rotten frozen food
- Catch the weirdo who is secretly rubbing garlic on your ice cubes at night
In researching the stinky ice phenomenon I found several useful articles;
I’m pleased to announce that our ice smells pretty good thanks to the thorough cleaning on Tuesday night, but how long will it last?!
